Fish Egg Thoran Recipe

Most people have a love-hate relationship with fish eggs. While it is deemed exotic and relished by many, there are others who get repulsed at the very thought. But in all fairness, it is a delicacy which can be indulged in occasionally. Today, we have a recipe for fish egg thoran. Thoran is a classic, traditional vegetarian preparation from Kerala but here, instead of using vegetables, we have used fried fish eggs. A simple to prepare, delicious side dish which goes best with steamed rice, dal and rasam.

Method: 1. Make sure that you keep the outer sac of the fish eggs while cleaning; a rupture in the sac means that the eggs will spill out into the oil while frying. 2. Make a paste using the red chilli powder, ¼ tsp turmeric powder and salt. Marinate the fish eggs in this and keep for at least 20 minutes. 3. Heat oil in a flat pan and shallow fry the fish eggs till done. Remember to always cover the pan while cooking the eggs as it tends to splutter a lot. 4. Remove and keep aside. Once cook, chop the fish eggs into tiny pieces. 5. Blend the grated coconut, green chillies, garlic and cumin to get a coarse mixture. Make sure not to add any water, the mixture has to be coarse and dry. 6. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan and crackle the mustard seeds. Then add the curry leaves and the coconut mixture. Fry on medium heat for about 3-4 minutes or till the coconut is just beginning to take colour. 7. Add the remaining turmeric powder and the chopped fish eggs. 8.
